SERVICES FOR CHILDREN & ADOLESCENTS

Conducting a Neuropsychological Assessment

Parents often consult a neuropsychologist because their child present academic or behavioral difficulties. The assessment is often suggested by the teacher or the family physician. It allows to determine the cognitive functioning of the child, its intellectual profile, attention, executive functions, memory, reading, mathematics, visual-perceptual or visual-constructive abilities. Some emotional aspects are also discussed, such as the presence of depression, anxiety, opposition or aggression. Before starting the assessment, an initial interview is conducted with the parents. Subsequently, the child is met two to three times for a total of 4 to 6 hours of assessment, on average. The assessment is carried out using different standardized tests, which are similar to games or school tasks, which makes it possible to compare the child to his peers. Teachers, resource teachers or other professionals are sometimes contacted to find out about the child’s behavior and difficulties in the classroom. Then the neuropsychologist analyzes the results and writes the report. The parents are finally met for the presentation of the report, and recommendations are made. The recommendations may relate to functioning at home, school or daycare. The child will be able to benefit from different accommodations in class, if necessary

Many adults are curious about their neuropsychological functioning. Some have long suspected the presence of a learning disability or attention deficit, but have never had a chance to verify it. Subsequently, the adult is met two to three times for a total of 4 to 6 hours of evaluation. The evaluation is carried out using standardized tests, which make it possible to compare the functioning of the individual to his peers.
